Gunung Raya

Gunung Raya is the highest mountain in Pulau Langkawi, with 881 meters above sea level. It is located at the central Langkawi, and surrounded by dense rainforest.

Although it is not a popular place for tourists to visits, some adventurous like to go up to Gunung Raya to enjoy a magnificent 360 degrees view of Pulau Langkawi. Some even enjoying the sunset view from the top of the hill.
Besides, there is a resort – D’Coconut Hill Resort located at the peak, and there is an observation tower. Entrance fees for the tower is RM10 per person (include a refreshment tea), and it is worth going up if the weather is sunny and clear.

How to Go

There are 2 ways you can reach Gunung Raya :
  1. Driving
    You may drive a rental car or even ride a bike, and going up Gunung Raya at the junction of Jalan Ulu Melaka. It takes around 25 minutes to reach the peak, with total distance of 13 km. The road isn’t used too much and not well maintained, thus need to drive slow and careful. Sometimes there might be some cows on the road.

    On the way up, there are few lookup points you can stop by to enjoy the view. But the most magnificent view will be at the peak, from the watching tower.
     
  2. Jungle Trekking
    There is jungle trekking stairs near the Panorama Langkawi Country Resort. There are total 4287 steps required to climb up, estimated 2 to 3 hours. The stair is not used too often, and sometimes there might be fallen tree trunk blocking the stair.
     

Operational Hours

Open all days, but need to be careful if driving up/down at night, as there is not road light along the way.

If you are going by trekking, try to avoid trekking in night/dawn, since there are no light at stairs and might be dangerous.
